History

Shipping and fishing have been the dominant activities here for many, many years. The village’s heyday is strongly associated with the years 1874 to 1925, the time of the sawmill epoch. Furuögrund has a nice harbour that is well sheltered from the prevailing winds. A mareograph, which is housed in a beautiful building, was built on the beach just to the north of the harbour in 1914. This mareograph, which measures the water level in the sea, is unique due to the fact that it is manually operated. Close to Furuögrund we have Roelsön, with a history dating back to Viking times. In 1543 the island was mentioned in Gustav Vasa’s “Jordabok” (literally “Land Book”) as “Rumholsöijarne”, and it was owned by the farmers in Ostvik. In 1652, Queen Kristina Romelsön donated the island to the city of Piteå. Halsön and Hamnskär, two lovely destinations for an excursion, are also in the area.

The boat club’s clubhouse is located on Halsön. Here you will find a wood-burning sauna, sandy beach, outcrops and electricity. The cabin is equipped with oven, fridge/freezer and microwave oven.
